Rebetiko and "Laiko" - which has roots in the urban music tradition of Greeks going back centuries - emerged as a distinct genre in the first half of the 20th century, capturing the everyday challenged of life in Greek cities, and touching on subjects like love, sorrow, drugs, politics and current events. This discussion and musical performance traced the Rebetiko story through the 30s and into World War II, the Nazi occupation, the resistance, and the civil war, and looked at how it evolved in the post-war era to tell a new Greek story, one that continues to express Greeks of all walks of life to this day.
